Up to now, most people have tended to associate cybersecurity with computers, smartphones, stolen bank accounts, the stock exchange, and Kevin Mitnick. Cybersecurity is something that the layman might refer to as ‘hacking’ and governments invest billions of dollars to prevent it. Indeed, Forbes estimated that the U.S. government has spent more than $100 billion in cybersecurity in the past decade1 and has already allocated $14 billion for the year 2016.

However, there is much more to it than that. Cybersecurity within the automotive sector is something that was totally unheard of few years back. It was, at least until the summer of 2015, a timeline that brought a lot of sensational press headlines that called into question the competence of some of the elite automotive brands about their casual approach towards security.
